Cape Town notes on water supply & purification
Bottled delivery and 18.9 litre refills are widely available, with depots in Epping, Parow and Retreat. Because the supply is soft and mild, many homes choose under-counter filters for taste and chlorine rather than full RO. The Cape's 2018 drought left a legacy of rainwater tanks and borehole systems in Constantia and Tokai, which need sediment filtration and UV, and industrial users in Atlantis consider commercial purification plants.
Drinking water in Cape Town
Cape Town's tap water comes mainly from the Western Cape Water Supply System, fed by the Theewaterskloof, Voëlvlei, Berg River, Wemmershoek and Steenbras dams. The 2018 drought taught residents to value storage and to question any single source. Municipal water is generally soft and tastes mild, though it can be chlorinated near the treatment works and old pipes in places add a metallic note. Planned maintenance shutdowns and burst mains do happen. Dispensers are used in Century City towers, Montague Gardens factories, Atlantis workshops, wine estates, Cape Flats schools and holiday rentals that cater to guests.
