Drinking water in Welkom
Welkom was built for the goldfields, and its water network shows its age. Bulk water comes from the Vaal system through Sedibeng Water, then the Matjhabeng municipality distributes it over a wide, flat grid of streets and townships. Burst mains, reservoir problems and broken pumps have left parts of Thabong, Virginia and Odendaalsrus without water for long stretches. Taps may show discolouration after repairs. With mining decline, many offices have downsized, but schools, clinics, shopping centres, guesthouses and the remaining industrial sites still buy coolers, and households commonly stock bottles and tanks for outage days.
Typical water dispenser hire requests in the area come from:
- Households: a hired dispenser for a birthday, wedding or family gathering in the garden
- Schools, crèches and colleges: hired dispensers for sports days, fêtes and matric events held on open fields
- Clinics, practices and care homes: hired units for a health awareness day or a vaccination drive in a community hall
